One-time links for text and files
Create a link to share text or a file. The recipient can open it once, after which the link stops giving access to it. Add a password if you need extra protection.
Why use a one-time link
Chat apps and file-sharing tools keep what you send indefinitely — a one-time link is built to avoid exactly that
One-time access
The recipient opens the content once. After the link is used, it can’t be accessed again.
Fewer traces in chat history
Share text or a file through a separate link instead of sending the content directly into the chat.
Password protection
Protect the content with a password. The recipient has to enter it to get access.
No signup required
Create a one-time link right away, without an account. Signing up only unlocks more options.
When it comes in handy
A few situations where a one-time link beats a regular message or email
Passwords and access credentials
Send a Wi-Fi password, a service login or a server credential through a one-time link instead of a regular chat message.
Documents and files
Send a document, a scan or another file through a link with limited access. The recipient can download it once.
Personal messages
Share text, an access code or other information that you don’t want to stay in your chat history.
How it works
What happens to the content between creating the link and it being opened
The content is stored protected
Text and files are encrypted before being saved on the server.
A limited number of views
By default, the link allows the content to be opened once.
A limited lifetime
The link stops working once the set period expires.
Password protection
Optionally restrict access to the content with a password.
Deleted after use
Once the view limit is reached, access is closed right away, and the content is removed from the server during the next automatic cleanup cycle.
How to create a one-time link
Four steps from text or a file to a ready-to-share link
Add text or a file
Type a message, attach a file, or use both at once.
Optionally set a password
Protect the content with an extra password.
Create the link
Lix.li prepares a one-time link for the recipient.
Send the link
Copy the link and send it to the recipient however you like.
Frequently asked questions
Create a one-time link now
It’s free and doesn’t require an account — sign up later if you need higher limits.
What is a one-time link
A one-time link lets a recipient open text or download a file once. After that, the content is no longer available through the same link. You can create one right on this page — type some text, attach a file, or do both at once.
When to use a one-time link
It’s useful for sharing passwords and access codes, exchanging documents and scans, and for notes or messages you’d rather not leave sitting in a chat history or inbox. It doesn’t prevent the recipient from copying content they’ve already opened — it limits repeat access through the link itself.
How a one-time link differs from a regular short link
A regular Lix.li short link redirects to a given address and works an unlimited number of times. A one-time link works differently: it stores its own content (text or a file) and stops serving it once the view limit is reached or the link expires.
How the content is protected
Text and files are stored encrypted on the server. You can also set a password, so the recipient has to enter it to see the content. Once it’s used or expires, access is closed and the data is removed during automatic cleanup.
What limits apply without an account
Without an account you can create up to 5 one-time links a month, with files up to 10 MB and a retention period of up to 1 day. Signed-in users get higher monthly limits, larger file sizes and a longer retention period.
